New version of Joomla available which means upgrading the software. This is a security upgrade to eliminate some issues that have been found.
Here's the overall procedure.
- Using cpanel (the control panel on my hosting system), made a full backup of the whole site, this includes databases, email accounts and all files.
- Download backup file, then compare the MD5 digest of the download with the one in the email from cpanel to verify that the downloaded backup is a true copy of what was generated on the site.
- After verification the backup file was deleted from the server to save space.
- Download the latest patcher file from Joomla.org, in this case the patcher to go from 1.5.12 to 1.5.13
- Upload the patcher to server space in the same directory and the Joomla installation
- Extract the files on the server
- Delete the patcher file from server
- Login to administrator back-end, check that the new version number shows
- Verify that the site is still serving as expected
Make notes as the procedure is followed so that you know each step was completed.
Don't be tempted to miss out the backup, if the upgrade fails and your whole site is messed up you will not be able to restore it unless you did the backup!
